Green Dog by Zhou Chunya


Green and red are strong Christmas colours but the Chinese artist Zhou Chunya has been famous for his green dogs over the years. It has become his trade mark and is a stalwart in the iron hot Chinese contemporary market. His basic education came from Sichuan Academy of Fine Art but he also studied in Kassel Academy in Germany. Certainly influenced by the German Expressionism, he limited it to nature with Chinese connections like the landscapes of rocks. The “green Dog” series depicting the artist’s pet German Shepard. In these paintings and sculptures, the green dog stands in as Zhou’s alter ego, enabling him to explore tropes of alienation and physic angst.
Zhou was ranked the second most successful Chinese contemporary artist in 2013, coming behind Zeng Fanzhi.
